Overview

Often, when 5U Field Training and Qualification does not go well, the fault lies in a misunderstanding between the expectations of the Check Pilot and the Examinee. Accordingly, We have prepared this exact outline of the tasks that will be covered during your 5U Field Training.

If you are not clear about what the knowledge and performance requirements are for any individual task, please reference the CAPF 5U Evaluation Criteria.

While reviewing the Evaluation Criteria, if you are unsure about how to accomplish the knowledge and performance requirements listed, please review the training for that task in the Drone Wiki’s CAPF 5U Ground School.

If you are particularly nervous about flight maneuvers, or if you are completely determined to pass Field Qualification in one (1) day, please do the following:

  1. Work with your Unit’s Aerospace Education Officer to:
    1. Order, or arrange to use, the RealFlight RC Simulator that comes packaged with CAP’s RC Airplane STEM Kit
    2. Order, or arrange to fly, CAP’s Quad STEM Kits
  2. Failing the above, members may consider buying a sub-$100 drone to learn on. Cheap drones are harder to control than expensive drones; this actually enhances learning since you must actively work the sticks to stabilize it.
